SoulsBorne Month: Top 20 Hardest Bosses – #14

Wow, another spot on the list? Big surprise! Hope you enjoy our pick…

***Level of difficulties we’ll see throughout this list:

Yellow-Orange = Bosses that are not necessarily hard on their own, but hard by either cheap tricks, gimmicks, or location.

Orange = Bosses that are tough on their own, but mainly tough due to a gimmick or trick. The difference here is that the boss may heavily rely on these attributes.

Red = Bosses that are hard to beat in either numbers or skill, truly tough bros.

Maroon = Bosses that are seemingly to near impossible, the god bosses of all bosses!

14. Ornstein and Smough (Dark Souls)

Attacks (ORN): Swing Combo, Spear Slam, Lightning Bolt, Lightning Stab, Gliding Stab, (Super Attacks) Spear Swing, Back-Step-Sweep, Spear Downward Stab, Electric Crash, Lightning Impale

Attacks (SMO): Hammer Smash, Jumping Hammer Smash, Single/Double Hammer Sweep, Trample Charge, Butt Slam, (Super Attacks) Electric versions of all his previous attacks…

Rewards (Super ORN): 50,000 Souls, Soul of Ornstein, Leo Ring

Rewards (Super SMO): 50,000 Souls, Soul of Smough

Rare Rewards: Either Ornstein or Smough’s armor set can now be obtainable by Domhnall of Zena

Our Level: Red

Description: Yes, the original dynamic duo themselves! I would seem like a poor man’s list without them. These two single handedly showed us the sheer difficulty of battle two bosses at once, not just in numbers but it very much different strengths and weaknesses. Ornstein was an honorary Dragon Slayer and member of Lord Gwyn’s personal warriors, known only as the four Knights. Smough is known as an executioner who even devours the bones of his fallen foes… Tasty. Separate they are strong, but together they are nearly undefeatable.

After your struggles through Anor Londo, arguably one of the toughest areas in the entire game if not the toughest, you’ll eventually get to the boss arena where these two reside in wait for your challenge. It’s hard enough to pursue through this area but now the boss fight seems to be even harder than what most players would anticipate. Ornstein wields a weapon known as the Dragonslayer spear, which aids his already apparent power of lightning. Smough wields a rather large hammer which fits both his physical presence as well as his super strength. One quick and sharp while the other is slow but deadly, an incredible combination to be sure!

What also makes this fight even tougher is what happens once the second phase of the battle kicks in. The second phase will happen once either Ornstein or Smough get killed off first, depending on who gets killed first will determine the ultimate difference of the battle. Essentially what will happen is that the remaining boss will basically absorb the others abilities/powers as well, making them become their “Super” forms. If Ornstein gets killed first, Super Smough will gain both Lightning attacks as well as a slight resistance to that element. If you kill Smough first, Super Ornstein will grow a bit in size and obtain the mighty strength of Smough. It is also good to be aware that depending on how your fight goes will also change your rewards after defeat, including which armor set you get, so make sure you are certain of which rewards you desire most.

Again, there is some knowledge to know to help you out. Out of the two super fights, Super Smough is the easiest one to handle and even has a better cinematic intro into his supreme form. Also both really hate Fire, and Smough is at least allergic to Lightning in the first half of the battle. But still these two are memorable for both their appeal and their prowess in battle, they are the true bros of the series, which is why they are a perfect candidate for the number fourteen spot.

My sources tell me that the next entry of this list will arrive in a few days…
