GBHorror2017: Top 10 Scariest And Unique Horror Games
Welcome back to another GBHorror2017 post! I think everyone was expecting a post like this eventually. Horror games are what I live for, they throw into scary situations that, while I prefer not to experience them in real life, are fun and enjoyable for the most part. Now this list will be a little different. So I am not a fan of reviews that essentially put labels on films or games, sometimes even books or soundtracks. This means that I hate the star or number rating scores. However, this does have number scores but just for the fun of it. I do not do these scores to concrete the games in a ranking or whatever, this list isn’t even in order of least to best. The scores are just a general idea of the level of joy some people may have, since unlike myself most people actually like number scores. You could say int this list, for example, my level of joy will always be appreciated with a really good game that is, by label standards, above a 30 out of 40. Also keep in mind that this is for both scary and unique horror games, which means there will be an odd variety. Anyways, have fun!
SILENT HILL 2
Scares: 10
Creepiness: 10
Story: 9
Style: 10
Total: 39/40
Silent Hill is a classic franchise, Silent Hill 2 is perhaps the best one of the series. Not only did it represent clever themes in the monsters which symbolize the plot, but it also introduced the most iconic monster in the Silent Hill franchise: Pyramid Head. So this games makes it to the list.
FATAL FRAME 2
Scares: 10
Creepiness: 10
Story: 8
Style: 9
Total: 37/40
Japanese Horror seems to know exactly what it’s doing. The fatal frame series is notorious for being one of the best ghost games out there. Fatal Frame 2 makes it because it was the first one in the series I’ve experienced, and it left scars on me that remain to this day. A delightful game, but certainly an overly terrifying one.
DEAD SPACE
Scares: 10
Creepiness: 10
Story: 8
Style: 10
Total: 38/40
Dead Space was a game that really threw me off guard when I first played it back in the day, and it certainly gave me a week of nightmares. This was the first game I ever experienced in this style and genre of horror, and I still think the original is best. I also recommend the sequel, Dead Space 2, for those interested. Also, RIP Visceral Games.
RESIDENT EVIL 1 / RESIDENT EVIL 7: BIOHAZARD
RE1: Scares: 8 RE7: Scares: 10
Creepiness: 10 Creepiness: 10
Story: 8 Story: 8
Style: 10 Style: 9
Total: 36/40 Total: 37/40
Resident Evil 1 had a unique sense of haunted mansion in a world filled with monsters and zombies, Resident Evil 7 brought back the horror roots in an excellent way for a series that drifted away from the genre. Both are equally clever in my eyes, with RE7 introducing elements of horror which I love and RE1 still making zombies relevant and creepy to this day.
OUTLAST
Scares: 10
Creepiness: 9
Story: 7
Style: 10
Total: 36/40
Truly one of the best horror first-person games, this games delivers the scares through near isolation and chase scenes, those horrific and scary chase scenes (shivers). While not all horror games should make your character defenseless, this one is all about defenseless. A really good game that is even more scary alone.
WHITE DAY
Scares: 10
Creepiness: 10
Story: 7
Style: 10
Total: 37/40
So if it’s not a really good Japanese horror game, then it is probably a really scary Korean game. This game is even more terrifying than it probably should be, with even the simplest creak of wood making you jump in fright. The remastered version even determines level of scares through difficulty, so it is hard not to recommend this one.
FIVE NIGHTS AT FREDDIE’S
Scares: 9
Creepiness: 10
Story: 5
Style: 10
Total: 34/40
While I agree that the series eventually got over-blown in popularity, I cannot help but appreciate the original’s unique introduction of a horror theme that has never truly been touched in media to such a degree. Yes, animatronics are scary and this games shows us why. And all that goes without mentioning how in-depth and insane the lore goes. Check it out, but chances are you already have.
JU-ON: THE GRUDGE – Haunted House Simulator
Scares: 10
Creepiness: 10
Story: 5
Style: 10
Total: 35/40
While not exactly a “game” in the traditional sense, it is still a very good experience that truly freaks you out. It is not a game that thrives on story, but it does come up with many ways to freak you out. I kind of wish there were more games closely similar to this one, we have come close but not close enough. So that is basically why it is one the list.
AMNESIA
Scares: 9
Creepiness: 10
Story: 7
Style: 9
Total: 35/40
While I think the companies newest game, Soma, is technically better and more scary, you cannot deny the great style and atmosphere the original amnesia brought to the table. The idea of darkness and shadow making you mad was a nice welcome and very H.P. Lovecraft of them to do, which I like. Also without this Soma would have never been made, so this goes on the list.
INSIDE / LITTLE NIGHTMARES
I: Scares: 9 LN: Scares: 9
Creepiness: 10 Creepiness: 10
Story: 10 Story: 8
Style: 10 Style: 10
Total: 39/40 Total: 37/40
Both of these games are very similar in design and premise. While I think Inside had the better philosophy in its story, which really makes you think about what it all means, Little Nightmares succeeds in using its 3D environment to its advantage, as well as amazing monster designs. Both have you play as an innocent kid, and both present eerie situations. So yeah, both make the list.
Thank you for looking through this list, I know it doesn’t present every best horror game as much as it lists the ones I’ve experienced. But I hope it was still fun nonetheless. Also please do’t take the numbering scores seriously, I don’t and I wrote them! Check back tomorrow for an even bigger list (no joke)…
