GBHorror2017: Top 20 Horror Films [2/2]
Yeah, basically you know the drill if you’ve looked at the original post from yesterday, so on with part two…
The Exorcist
Scares: 9
Creepiness: 10
Story: 8
Style: 8
Total: 35/40
There have been a good number of exorcism films made, many are good and many are bad, but they would not have been possible without the success of the original exorcism film, simply titled the Exorcist. Based on a true event, the story is both simple and classical in its approach, and the practical effects of the demonic possession of the daughter is something to behold.
The Shining
Scares: 9
Creepiness: 10
Story: 9
Style: 10
Total: 38/40
Still a beloved horror film that shows off the idea of unexpected possession and emotionally deranged characters. Stanley Kubrick was a massively well-known director who took the story of Stephen King and changed it into a film that is arguably better than the novel it came from. And while the original author disapproves of it, the fans will remain to always appraise it.
The Woman In Black
Scares: 10
Creepiness: 10
Story: 9
Style: 10
Total: 39/40
When this film originally came out, I feel as though it came out at the right time. Up to this point we had many standard horror films with an array of jump scares but no heart in creativity and style. This film does horror well, without the constant use of sudden noises and music, And the way the old mansion home looks and feels is incredible and very stylistic, it also compliments the pretty unique story as well. Please watch this ine and ignore its sequel.
Psycho
Scares: 8
Creepiness: 10
Story: 10
Style: 10
Total: 38/40
We know there is many recent or modern horror films on here, but lay your worries to rest because we still love our horror classics. It was hard to choose between this and the original classic The Haunting, but I decided to go with this because it is more iconic as well as having some really fun and messed up moments, still messed up now as it was back in 1960.
Paranormal Activity
Scares: 10
Creepiness: 10
Story: 7
Style: 9
Total: 36/40
Not much else to say from what I’ve said in a previous post, but this original film is a good one. We can thank this film for re-lighting the flame again for found footage films, which was originally lit by the Blair Witch Project. The way this film does horror with a low budget is great, and the whole ambience of demonic presence is chilling. Trust when I say it is better than you expect.
Noroi: The Curse
Scares: 10
Creepiness: 10
Story: 8
Style: 10
Total: 38/40
This is actually one on the list that I haven’t seen yet, but according to Geoff this is a must watch. The film is a Japanese found footage which is notorious in the country for having an unusually long and complex story with a large ensemble of cast members. From what I can tell the film is generally liked despite some whining about the complexity of the plot. I will have to check it out for myself, but Geoff insists it’s a good one so it makes the list.
The House Of The Devil
Scares: 9
Creepiness: 10
Story: 7
Style: 10
Total: 36/40
This film pays as a tribute to the filming and cinematography days of the the 1980’s and 70’s of horror classics such as Texas Chainsaw Massacre or Friday The 13th. The film also cleverly blends the genres of both a slasher and haunted house-esque horror, with a little satanic cherry on top. If that doesn’t interest you then I dunno what will.
Silent House
Scares: 10
Creepiness: 10
Story: 7
Style: 10
Total: 37/40
The best part about Silent House is how the film is shot. It never cuts away or transitions to a new scene, the camera is pretty much always a single shot following the main character throughout without fail until the very end. Also, having this film be one of the very first films to star our very own Scarlet Witch, Elizabeth Olsen, is also pretty cool since she does an amazing job in this film. Definitely search for this one.
Arachnophobia
Scares: 9
Creepiness: 10
Story: 9
Style: 9
Total: 37/40
No matter how brave you are, there is still something about spiders that really get to us in some manner. Arachnophobia is not an incredibly scary film, in fact it has some humorous parts, but it does do creepy at its finest. Again, this is definitely a classic that is worth at least one watch in a person’s lifetime.
A Tale Of Two Sisters / The Uninvited
Scares: JPN-10Â Â Â USA-10
Creepiness: JPN-9Â Â Â USA-9
Story: JPN-10Â Â Â Â USA-9
Style: JPN-9Â Â Â Â Â USA-9
Total: JPN-38/40Â Â Â Â USA-37/40
The original released version of the two, which was the Korean made A Tale Of Two Sisters, was largely appraised back in 2004. It is still largely the highest grossing Korean-horror film to date! It is an enjoyably creepy film with an excellent twist. The American version, while not met with the same appraisal as the original, is still a fun watch for it’s own means. We suggest watching the American version first before heading straight to the original, it will be a fun mini marathon.
Thank you for looking through our long two part list. We hope you enjoyed it and perhaps agree with most of our choices. Check back tomorrow for another Halloween post, arguably around 1 pm…
